The Companies Office, a unit of the Ministry of Economic Development, has launched a new website. What is special about the new website is that it is based on ‘Open Source’ software. It is only the third government department to do so but the first one of the “top five” Government sites in NZ (by number of visitors).
The product being used by the Ministry is “Plone”, which is one of the most commonly used Open Source systems for managing website content. Igniter was enlisted by the Ministry to evaluate strategic implications of using an open source content management system for the department.

Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery's Birmingham Black History website (www.birminghamblackhistory.com) has been redeveloped using the Joomla open source content management system.
The website is officially launched on October 1st 2006 in time for Birmingham Black History month. The aim of the new website is to promote Black History throughout the year, and to encourage the public to add content to the website in the form of events, news, articles, images and a discussion forum. Further adult learning resources are also being developed for the site.
The Birmingham Black History website is funded by Renaissance in the Regions.
Wordpress has released it’s next stage software platform for bloggers, Wordpress 2.1 - named Ella.
Improvements to the software include the ability to make it work better as a Content Management System (CMS). According to Matt Mullenweg, lead coder at Wordpress, the use of SQL queries has also been extensively revisited to make Wordpress more efficient.
Additional improvements include over 550 bug fixes.
