Web hosting and development company Nacio (nacio.com) announced on Thursday it has completed the conversion of The Buck Institute for Age Reasearch's Web site (buckinstitute.org) to the Joomla content management system (joomla.org).
"With the site migrated to Joomla," says Charles Wyke-Smith, director of production at Nacio, "the Buck Institute is able to take complete control of the content on its Web site, enabling non-technical members of the Buck staff to add content on an ongoing basis. Workflow and permissions based access ensures that every piece of content goes through a pre-defined approval chain before going live, and users can be assigned specific areas of the site, or even individual pages, that they can edit."
When a regional transit authority only had six weeks to build a complex Web site and migrate tens of thousands of web pages, they turned to Ingeniux Corporation for XML-based Web content.
Traditionally, content management systems have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and taken months to implement. But a new breed of mid-market content management solutions, like Ingeniux CMS by Seattle-based Ingeniux Corporation, are breaking all of the rules and providing solutions more effective than traditional enterprise systems at a fraction of the cost and time to implement.
This was the case for Sound Transit, a leading regional transit authority that builds and operates rail, bus, and transportation improvement systems. With a large ridership and over $600 million in construction projects in 2006 alone, Sound Transit has critical communications needs that require rapid updates to its web site(s) and the ability to manage vast amounts of Web content, documents, and media.
Since the release of WordPress, web users have customized this blogging software to suit their own needs.
One of the most established needs in today's computing world is the need for content management, particularly, a Content Management System (CMS). With its rich set of features and flexibility, WordPress can be customized into a major CMS.
Content Management System
Content management can be described as the process of creating, managing and publishing online content sans any programming or technical skills. If used properly, content management saves time and money. Effective content management can be attained by utilizing a content management system.
A content management system is a web-based application connected to a database that allows users to update a website without having to know any HTML (Hypertext Markup Language, standard language with which all web pages are built). It is software used to manage websites and web content. A CMS facilitates the maintenance of content but not the design on a website.
Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, UK. A new book focusing on the Joomla! Content Management System is now available for immediate delivery.
The book, entitled ‘Building a website using a CMS in 90 minutes’ is published through Management Books 2000 Ltd is aimed at individuals and companies that are new to CMS and need help and advice understanding the benefits of a CMS (over a static HTML site, perhaps currently designed in-house) and how to implement such a system.
It discusses the process of evaluating the best CMS for your needs and then takes you through installing and customising it to suit your needs. While the book discusses various systems in the initial chapters, such as XOOP, PHP-Nuke etc, it quickly focuses on Jooma!, taking the user through all of the processes required to build a fully functional, feature-rich site.
The often-missed subject of backing up your site is also covered in-depth. For those looking to migrate an existing static HTML site there are two chapters dedicated to installing existing available templates or designing your own. Finally, the appendices list useful information such as style sheets and a quick installation and setup guide.

e2train has added the Package Exchange Notification Services (PENS) standard to the new version of its successful Kallidus Learning Management System. This specification enables rapid deployment of e-learning content between authoring tools, content management systems and learning management systems.
The PENS specification is the output of a supplier workgroup initiative between leading suppliers, and is supported by the Aviation Industry Computer Based Training (CBT) Committee (AICC), a key compliance standards body for the e-learning industry.
PENS is designed to fill a gap that exists between the creation of e-learning content packages by content authors, and the deployment of those packages on Learning Management Systems by administrators in order for learners to access the material. The specification simplifies this deployment. Using PENS, a content system notifies the server that an e-learning package is available for collection. A PENS compatible server then collects and processes the package which can use existing content packaging formats, such as AICC course interchange files, SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004. Finally, as the content is processed, the server can automatically inform the developer, or other systems, of workflow progress or report any problems via messages which can be sent by HTTP or email.
The Christchurch City Council has gone to tender for a content management system to support and streamline its internet and internet presence.
The tender, with responses due September 6, forms one part of a wider web information architecture project being undertaken at the Council.
Responses from vendors able to install a suitable web content management system across multiple sites and environments are sought.
At present the Council uses Interwoven and Microsoft technologies for content management and deployment. But, in keeping with e-government guidelines, the Council will consider open source alongside commercial software solutions.
