After 8 months of development we are ready to release Drupal 5.0 to the world. Today is also Drupal's 6th birthday, so the timing could not be more perfect. Drupal 4.0 was released in 2002 and finally we feel confident to increase the major version number from 4 to 5.

Drupal powers sites across the web, ranging from the personal weblog of Tim Berners-Lee, podcast sites like TWIT.tv, community driven sites like SpreadFireFox.com, artist communities like Terminus 1525 to large media sites like TheOnion.com, MTV and even sites for NASA.

Liferay open source portal adds content management, ESB links

By CMS-Zone, on 09-01-2007 17:57

Liferay Inc, an open source Java portal company, has just released a new version of its offering that adds new Ajax mashup capabilities, plus links to workflow engines and enterprise service buses.

Version 4.2 adds a new Google Maps portlet which can be used as the basis for mashups. It has also improved links with Alfresco, an open source federated content management system designed by the much of the team that first developed Documentum. With the link, you can publish content in Alfresco through the Liferay portal. That's possible because both tools support JSR 168, the Java standard for portlets.

Another key new feature is support for ServiceMix JBI container. ServiceMix is a JBI-compliant implementation of a container that can be transported through an ESB. The idea of including support of ServiceMix is to enable portlets to tie into a distributed SOA environment. For instance, with the link into an ESB, a portlet could call on a business process that is represented using the JBPM Java standard.

Web Management: Decisions, Issues & Potential

By CMS-Zone, on 06-12-2006 17:28

Andrew Charnley, M.D of Igaro Ltd and qualified ICT teacher has spent the last four years researching and developing a tool for which there appears to be no shortage; a content management system. This article looks at the birth of content management for the web, the issues and differences between solutions and the introduction of Igaro's software into the market.

Over the last few years, thanks largely to a price drop for high-speed Internet connections, more people are online then ever before. Today our young empower their I.T knowledge like a second language and have come to expect a new level of interaction and communication from web sites. Even small businesses are harnessing the Internet for delivering information and selling products. But these demands have introduced new problems for website owners. In the 90’s web pages were written by hand or basic programs and were defined as being ‘static’. These websites were simply files send over to the reader, and they were horrendously difficult to manage once the website grew. Since they were simply delivered, it was difficult to process information sent back to the user and to personalise the pages based on this information.

A software called Vignette started a wave of new web software that treats content, design and functionality separately and merges them together to form a web page. These pages are known as being 'dynamic'. With the components for a website separate they can be managed, processed and customised. The dynamic website was born.

TopNotchWebsites has created an example website to demonstrate the features of open source content management system (CMS) websites. The ability to create a community of uses is demonstrated on the site. Members of the community can make connections to other users, send private messages and create their own homepages. Other features include forums, podcasting, chat rooms and newsletters. The example site can be accessed at http://www.topnotchwebsites.com/example1.

CMS websites give business owners control over their Internet presence. The website content is edited through an administrative area in an editor similar to a word processor. They simply push save and it is live on the web. There is no need to know HTML or anything about servers.

Creating a managed website

By CMS-Zone, on 04-12-2006 16:41

"Do you manage a website? Maybe you’re looking after the site for a small business. Maybe you’re doing it for a community group. Perhaps it’s your own personal site. You’d like it to be dynamic: to have some fresh news every week and a home page that’s always up to date. Therein lies the problem. You’re tired of constantly editing HTML to make these changes. And every change gets more complex as you try to keep the look-and-feel consistent across all the pages. Or maybe the site was developed by an external designer. That shielded you from the technical complexities, but now every change takes time and costs money. Perhaps you need a content management system (CMS)...

Liferay Specialists Create Large Consumer Site with Over 350 Pages of Content for Insurer HanseMerkur Under Tight Time Constraint; Search Engine Results Improved

Liferay, a leading provider of enterprise-class open source software products, announced today that its professional services group has implemented Liferay Portal 4.1.2 for the new public Web site of HanseMerkur, Germanys second-oldest mutual insurance company and a major provider of health, life, travel and property insurance. The site brings new capabilities to both HanseMerkur and its customers, at a cost far below commercially available portal and Content Management System (CMS) alternatives.

Liferay Portals economical open source framework provides HanseMerkur with a superior platform for ongoing development, integration and maintenance. In addition to its improved CMS which supports over 350 pages of content, the site offers new customer features such as the ability to initiate an insurance contract online. An improved Search Engine Optimization (SEO) technology also leverages changes in content in real time, thereby increasing the incidence of search engine hits.

Search Engines Unite On Unified Sitemaps System

By CMS-Zone, on 24-11-2006 16:33

Source: SearchEngineWatch

In alphabetical order, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have agreed to all support a unified system of submitting web pages through feeds to their crawlers. Called Sitemaps, taking its name from the precursor system that Google launched last year, all three search engines will now support the method.

More about Sitemaps is to be provided through the new Sitemaps.org site. As part of the announcement, the existing sitemaps protocol from Google gets a version upgrade to Sitemaps 0.9. However, no actual changes to the system have taken place. The new version number was simply done to reflect the protocol moving from an exclusive Google system to one that all three search engines now support.

Anyone already using Google Sitemaps needn't do anything different. The only change is now those sitemaps will be read by Microsoft and Yahoo, as well. More information will either be posted at the Sitemaps.org site or see these sections from each of the search engines, which I expect to be updated soon:

Magnolia Reduces Enterprise Content Management's Turnaround Time to Zero

By CMS-Zone, on 20-11-2006 18:08

Time-to-market is ever more important in today's fast-paced world. While Magnolia is not the first Content Management System to realize this, its solution is unique: it cuts out the two most time-consuming bits of traditional CMS implementation - creating custom HTML and building templates - with an online tool that creates the desired result directly in the browser.

Magnolia Enterprise Edition introduces significant new features and is backed with unlimited support from Magnolia International.

Magnolia Enterprise Edition allows users to:

* create custom layout directly in the browser
* display Magnolia content in JSR-168 portals
* authenticate and authorize using directory servers (LDAP, ADS)
* package content and resources into single entities to facilitate multi-stage deployments.

Collaboration Rules

Empowered customers—demanding to access or create content tailored to their needs and delivered on their own terms—have turned up the heat on technology and content companies alike, pushing them to bring greater innovation to market.

But there's a catch. Winning the customer can't be reduced to delivering "bigger, better, faster" technology solutions. Customers simply won't accept the traditional trade-off between improved innovation and increased complexity and cost. In fact, organizations want to increase business agility by decreasing complexity. It's a seismic shift in thinking that creates a new landscape in which vendors must compete based on how well they can give control back to customers rather than wresting it from them.
